NovaOS for the SDS800X HD, on Linux 6.12

Our SDS814X HD runs NovaOS: our own Linux 6.12 kernel on the scope's Zynq UltraScale+, in place of the Linux 5.10 its Siglent firmware ships with, NovaOS's own scope UI on its 1024 × 600 touchscreen, and real acquisition through NovaOS's own acquisition engine. It starts from a USB stick and runs in RAM, so the scope's own flash is never written: without the stick, the scope starts Siglent's software as before. The automatic measurements are next.

Our SDS814X HD running NovaOS from a USB stick: CH1 on the scope's CAL output, a clean 0 to 3 V, 1 kHz square wave at 1.00 V/div and 500 µs/div. The measurement readouts under the grid are still blank; they are next.

CH1Which scopes

The SDS800X HD series: the SDS802X HD, SDS804X HD, SDS812X HD, SDS814X HD, SDS822X HD and SDS824X HD.

NovaOS has run only on our SDS814X HD; the other models are not yet run on. We confirm each model on a real unit before calling it supported.

CH2Where NovaOS stands

Step 1Linux 6.12 on the scopedone

Our own kernel on the Zynq UltraScale+, started from a USB stick into RAM.

Step 2Screen, touch and controlsdone

The NovaOS scope UI on the touchscreen, with its keys and knobs.

Step 3Acquisitiondone

Real waveforms through NovaOS's own acquisition engine.

Step 4Measurementsnext

The automatic readouts, then NovaOS measured against Siglent's firmware on the same unit, as on the Rigol scopes.

What runs on our SDS814X HD today, under NovaOS:

PartOn our SDS814X HD
StartFrom a USB stick, running in RAM; the scope's own flash is never written
KernelOur own Linux 6.12 on the Zynq UltraScale+, in place of the Linux 5.10 the Siglent firmware ships with
Screen and controlsNovaOS's own scope UI on the 1024 × 600 touchscreen; touch, the front-panel keys and the knobs work
AcquisitionNovaOS's own acquisition engine: the CAL output shows as a correct 0 to 3 V, 1 kHz square wave, and timebase, trigger, horizontal position and autoset pass our acquisition checks
CalibrationThe scope's own factory calibration, read from the unit; the NovaOS image carries none
Remote controlSCPI in the SDS800X HD's own command set, LXI/VXI-11 discovery, and a remote view of the screen over VNC

Not done yet: the automatic measurement readouts (pk-pk, frequency and the others); a measurement of NovaOS against Siglent's firmware, so this page makes no comparison; our second SDS814X HD, still on Siglent's firmware; and the other SDS800X HD models.

CH3Starting it, and going back

NovaOS starts from a USB stick and runs in RAM; it never writes the scope's own flash. Power the scope off, take the stick out, and it starts on Siglent's own software again, untouched. There is no download for the SDS800X HD yet: as for the other families, it opens after a legal review.

CH4Not a licence hack

The same rule as on the Rigol scopes: NovaOS is a separate operating system whose engine drives the hardware directly. It uses no option codes, licence files or patches to Siglent's software, so the hardware sets the limits. More in the FAQ, and every instrument and where NovaOS stands.
